![]() The engine cooling system for the SVT Contour is adapted from the European-marked Ford Mondeo, with a radiator core that is 14mm deeper than that of the mainstream Contour V6. The system is accented with polished stainless-steel exhaust tips that neatly integrate into the rear valence panel. These applications leave the internal surfaces with a nearly mirror-smooth finish, reducing friction and thus allowing air to move more quickly and efficiently. On the other side of the combustion chamber, the SVT Contour has a specially designed tubular steel exhaust manifold system that feeds gasses into a 2.25-inch stainless steel exhaust which maximizes efficiency and reduces backpressure. A long runner feeds each primary intake valve to ensure ample torque a short runner opens above 3,400 rpm, feeding each secondary valve to provide large volumes of air at higher rpm to create horsepower. To speed the delivery of air and also the fuel-air charge to the combustion chamber, the upper intake manifold as well as the primary and secondary intake ports of the heads are enhanced through the use of special processes. The cams operated four valves per cylinder through roller-finger followers with hydraulic lash adjustment. The SVT Duratec induction system features numerous special components: a large-capacity conical air cleaner, a 70mm mass-air sensor, and a 60mm-bore throttle body. The SVT Duratec features a two-stage intake system. To enable the engine to gather revs especially quickly, the flywheel is lightened by almost two pounds compared to that of the standard Duratec.Up top are twin-cam heads, driven by a single chain per bank. The pistons connect to a fully counterweighted forged steel crankshaft through sinter-forged connecting rods. The SVT Duratec possesses the power, torque, and revability needed by a lithe sports sedan.A compact transversely mounted 60-degree V6 with double overhead cams and four valves per cylinder, the SVT Duratec has the architecture of a classic sports sedan engine.Rising and falling within the bores of the light and highly rigid aluminum-alloy Duratec block is a sextet of forged aluminum-alloy pistons with a 10.25:1 compression ratio. In the final cammy rush to the 200 horsepower at the far end of the rev band, the SVT Duratec V6\'s 24 valves and four cams sing in frantic precision, and the exhaust note sharpens to a fearsome point. The heart of any performance car is an engine that inspires its driver with urgent music and an unspoken demand to perfectly exploit the thickest portion of the powerband when shooting through a curve. By the men and women of Ford SVT.Without the briefest glance at the tach, a driver should know where he is in the engine\'s power curve, based purely on the sharp urgency of the sound reaching the cabin. Or when the car responds intuitively to precise steering commands and takes a perfect set through a seemingly endless bowled corner in the Texas Hill Country.Who creates cars that speak this language? And how are they created?By gifted engineers who understand that humans can actually derive pleasure from the workings of a performance car. Or when intimate messages are filtered to the driver\'s hands about the tire grip while pushing hard along a high-crowned two-lane in New England. It happens when driver and machine are traversing a demanding stretch of mountain road, the shoulder being nothing more than wrinkled asphalt and a foot of dust beside a deep gorge. Such a car connects with its driver and liberates his or her spirit, like endorphins produced through exercise, or perhaps in the same way listening to a symphony at a concert hall can wash the human soul. They are more than tools for moving us from home to office to grocery store. In a world where cars are bought and sold like so many appliances, how can anyone still believe a car possesses a soul? But some machines do transcend. ![]()
